Settling into our new home has been such a breath of fresh air for us! After the hustle and bustle of city life, it's really nice to be without traffic and have a huge yard and nice neighbors. In our desire for a lifestyle change, we've embraced all of the opportunities presented to us to live simply. Creating meals from scratch has always been a passion of mine, but I seemed to always be a little too busy to take it further than making fresh dinner. What I wanted to accomplish here was obtaining local produce as much as possible and then creating everything I could from those ingredients, i.e. jam, hummus, sauces, etc. And in that effort I began right away by making our own jam. One of the trees in our backyard yielded a nice crop of plums, and here are a few pictures from the process of making homemade plum jam.

The jam turned out beautifully and was a perfect mix of sour and sweet. The recipe I used can be found here.

The experience was fun, and it has been satisfying to have homemade jam for the past few months. We were so pleased with the outcome that I tackled a spiced apple jelly using fresh apples from a friend's tree in their backyard. I'm looking forward to trying different types of fruit soon and continuing to enjoy the taste of fresh homemade jams made right in my own kitchen.
